Thanks to a fellow immigrant from one of the rentals whatsapp groups who is now a roommate, I was lucky enough to find an affordable room to rent in Toronto before moving, so I was able to move right into a semi-permanent place. It is a room in a 4 bedroom 2 bathroom apartment that the landlord rents out by the room. My goal was to find a relatively cheap rental to stay in until I could buy a more permanent place. Most immigrants stay in Airbnb rentals initially because it is difficult to find a place from overseas, so I consider myself extremely lucky to have found this place.
I have been able to meet and chat with the other roommates in my first week here and am happy to say they all are very nice and interesting people. However, one of them is a second generation immigrant, born and raised in Canada, but a Trump supporter! The other night, his friend was over who is an even bigger Trump supporter and also born and raised in Canada! The three of us had a lively discussion.
In brief, here are my main impressions and takeaways from my discussion with these two Canadian Trump supporters:
First of all, I was happy to find that they are not socially conservative, racist, sexist, or bigoted. They were very reasonable and respectful, and they respect legal immigrants. I was also happy to hear that even the conservatives in Canada believe that legal immigration of skilled workers is a good thing. They resent illegal immigrants who jump to the front of the line by sneaking across the border while we legal immigrants patiently wait for everything to be processed, a wait that can be very stressful and nerve-wracking. I can understand this, but the issue of illegal immigration is quite complicated and can be discussed at length, but I won't go into it in this blog entry. However, I will say that insulting a country or racial group just because some people from that country or race immigrate illegally is never acceptable.
They don't think Trump really means what he says when he insults people because he insults everyone, including other white males, and well, he has always insulted all kinds of people. In other words, Trump is just being Trump. This I take issue with. I strongly believe that all of us, especially the president, must be respectful and courteous to each other at all times. Or at least civil with each other, if for no other reason so we all can remain peaceful and rational. There is no place for personal attacks, such as insulting someone's looks or race or religion, and certainly not sexual harassment. A president should be discussing and making his case for substantive issues and policies, not attacking other people's looks.
There is a lot of corruption among Canadian politicians, at least here in Ontario! I arrived just a week and a half before provincial elections and saw many signs for candidates on lawns in front of houses and buildings. Apparently Ontario's incumbent Premier (equivalent to a US state's governor) ran up huge budget deficits over the years, and Ontario's deficit is even bigger than California's! And I had thought California's deficit was scary. (A few days after our discussion, Canada's Progressive Conservative candidate was elected Premier; we will see if he actually cleans things up financially. There has been a dearth of details on exactly the new Premier plans to fix the budget).
My roommate and his friend do not like the universal healthcare system here. They point to long waits, especially in the emergency room, where the average wait is about 6 hours. I would say this sounds a lot like the US, maybe a longer waiting time, except that other than in the emergency room, the uninsured are not admitted, and the bill for emergency care in the US is maybe 15 times higher than that of Canada. In my opinion, the US has the most inefficient healthcare system for ordinary people because emergency care is the only care that is guaranteed for everyone regardless of ability to pay. So many people who cannot afford health insurance wait until they have an emergency to seek medical care; this is most wasteful because if these people had had access to healthcare earlier, their conditions would have been easier and much less expensive to treat, not to mention that these people would not have suffered for so long.
They believe that Islam encourages extremism, more than other religions, because almost all terrorists and shooters who attacked under the guise of religion invoked Islam. I believe it is not justified to blame Islam for the extreme beliefs and actions of some terrorists who are very few compared to the overall population of Muslims. I would say they are not real Muslims and simply twist Islam to justify their unjustifiable actions. I won't go into the roots of Islamic extremism here, but at a high level, I would point to the societies they come from and their destitute, impoverished conditions.
Overall, I am grateful to have had the opportunity for some substantive but respectful discussions with Trump supporters. One of my goals in coming here to Canada is to learn as much as possible first hand about the Canadian system, including its strengths and flaws. Every country, like every human being, has strengths and flaws. At least at this point, I believe it is worth living with the flaws of Canada in exchange for benefiting from its strengths.

Es un cuarto en un apartamento con 4 cuartos y 2 baños y el dueño alquila cada cuarto por separado. Mi objetivo fue alquilar un cuarto económico hasta pueda comprar una casa permanente. La mayoría de los inmigrantes alquilan apartamentos de Airbnb al principio porque es difícil encontrar un apartamento afuera de Canadá, así que tengo suerte haber encontrado este apartamento.
Me encontré y hablé con los otros 3 compañeros de cuarto en mi primera semana aquí. Afortunadamente todos son muy amables y interesantes. Pero uno de mis compañeros de cuarto es de Canadá pero es un inmigrante de segunda generación pero un seguidor de Trump también! La otra noche, su amigo, también originalmente de Canadá, visitaba que apoya Trump aún más. Tuvimos una discusión muy estimulante.

No creen que Trump realmente crea lo que dice cuando insulta a otros porque Trump insulta todos, incluso otros hombres blancos, como siempre. Trump simplemente es Trump. No estoy de acuerdo con esto. Creo mucho que todos nosotros, especialmente el presidente, siempre debemos estar respetuosos y cortés con uno del otro para que estemos pacíficos y racionales. Nunca debemos atacar a otros personalmente, como sobre el aspecto o la raza, y nunca es aceptable acoso sexual. El presidente debe discutir sus políticas y asuntos sustantivos en lugar de atacar los aspectos de otros.

Llegué solo una semana y un medio antes las elecciones provinciales y veía muchas pancarta de los candidatos en frente de las casas y edificios. Aparentemente la actual primera ministra de Ontario causó un déficit de presupuesto muy grande con los años, aun mas grande de lo de California! Varios días después de nuestra discusión el candidato del partido Conservadores Progresivos ganó la elección. Vamos a ver si arreglará el presupuesto. El no dio detalles de cómo va a arreglar el presupuesto.
A mi compañero de cuarto y su amigo no les gusta el seguro universal de salud aquí a causa de los retrasos en la sala de emergencias. Dicen que en promedio, tienen que esperar 6 horas en la sala de emergencias. Tal vez se necesiten esperar un poco menos de tiempo en los EE.UU., pero la sala de emergencias es el solo lugar donde se admiten todos, y la cuidad de emergencia en los EE.UU. es mas cara que la de Canadá de aproximadamente 15 veces. En mi opinión, el sistema de salud en los EE.UU. es lo menos eficaz para la persona corriente porque solo la sala de emergencias, la mas cara de todo, admiten todos. Como resultado, las personas sin seguro médico esperan hasta una emergencia buscar la atención médica. No estoy de acuerdo con esto. Creo que la cultura y pobreza son razones mas importantes, pero no voy a discutir este tema en esta pagina.
En general, agradezco por la oportunidad discutir algunas ideas sustantivas respetuosamente con 2 seguidores de Trump. Uno de mis objetivos viniendo aquí a Canadá es aprender de primera mano lo más posible sobre el sistema canadiense, incluso los puntos fuertes y las deficiencias. Cada país, como cada persona, tiene sus puntos fuertes y sus deficiencias. Por lo menos ahora, creo que vale la pena vivir con las deficiencias de Canadá a cambio de beneficiarse de los puntos fuertes.
